Marriage Poll

According to this Rasmussen poll, 68% of Americans believe marriage should be defined as a union between one man and one woman.

Here are more interesting stats:

67% believe the issue should be put to a vote.
12% believe judges should step in.
5% believe elected officials should decide.

While the laws on the books across the country defined marriage as between a man and a woman, judges stepped in (though 88% of Americans think they shouldn't) and started to undo these laws. Then our elected officials (like Dave Obey) have acted as barriers to allowing the voters to decide. Of course elected officials like Obey think they are smarter than 100% of the voters anyway.

I'm sure Obey will figure out some John Kerry-esq position like, he favors the State Ban but not the Federal one to cover up the fact he's voted against it many times.

Just like the extremely misleading ads now running against the marriage ammendment for Wisconsin, Obey will continue to make this about "unmarried rights."

The problem is that when the ads state that Wisconsin already defines marriage as between one man and one woman it does not clarify that it is only a statute that can easily be discarded by the courts while an ammendment would have to be proven unconstitutional. A little more difficult given that the US Supreme Court has held that it is up to the individual states to define marriage laws.

The ad also states that pensions would be denied to unmarried couples. Shouldn't the statement be, "we want to force companies to pay pensions to the one-year live-in girlfriends of their former employees who have died." That way companies will have to pay pensions in perpetuity.

Isn't it discernible to these simpletons that you shouldn't allow non-family members to visit people in hospitals without prior approval from the patient. Anyone on the street can claim to be a "boyfriend" or "girlfriend" if a hospital does not have that important safeguard. Under their conditions (those who ran the ad), it would be easier for the person who put you IN the hospital to come and pay you a visit. Capital idea!

Now get out there and make a difference.
