Obey's Spin - Journalists Let Him Off Hook

In this Journal Sentinel article, it is now clear what Obey's strategy is in defending his anti-marriage position. He's referencing his vote for the Defense of Marriage Act and his "personal belief" that marriage is between a man and a woman. Saying the constitution should not include references to living arrangements.

What we are most disappointed in the Journal Sentinel for is letting him off the hook for his earlier comment calling the marriage amendment "ridiculous." If a Republican had called the Voting Rights Act ridiculous, the media outlets would be relentlessly pursuing that story and would be calling for apologies and retractions. Because it's a Democrat and it's not a liberal cause, it's allowed to be swept under the rug.

I commented on an earlier post that it would be great if someone would take the initiative to start up a "Dump Obey" campaign like the one that was active during the '94 election. Someone responded, saying that this blog, among other venues was taking such an initiative.

However, as great a news source as this is, it is not read by many people. Part of it may be because many folks in the 7th district do not have internet. But it is mostly because people don't know about it.

What to do? To make a formal organization is too messy. You start getting overhead costs and then there's the gov. regulations, too.

I call on all folks reading this blog, to think outside the box. Do we really need a formal dump obey organization to accomplish what we wish to accomplish?

Each individual who reads this blog has the potential to be an organization. Nothing stops an individual from raising the funds to make a radio spot, take out a newspaper ad, or rent a billboard. It isn't that tough. I know of a political blog just like this in another state which is read by a friend of mine. He just took out an ad in the local newspaper with the website's address and a short pithy saying to make a point. He is not affiliated with the website in any way, but he chooses to do this because it helps the cause the website supports. He also has some high visibility property upon which he hopes to erect a sign with the website address.

We in Wisconsin are practical people, and yet sometimes we fail to do the most practical things like these to help out. But they are so easy to do, so why not?

It would be great if there were a list of all the media outlets in the district with numbers to their advertizing departments available on the blog.

We will get a media list posted soon so people can do letters to the editor, etc.

We have also been bouncing around the ideas to create either a formal or an ad hoc organization. We hope to have something to announce soon.
