The 7th in Play

In an article titled, WI 7: GOP Pegs Obey Upset Hopes on Gay Marriage Ban, Washington, DC publication Congressional Quarterly looks in at the race against Obey.

Here's a quick fact check for you - Dave Obey opposes the marriage ban, a ban that will drive Republicans and conservative Democrats to the polls.

While we at Obey Out believe there is plenty in Obey's record that is out-of-step with the people of the Seventh District, we will take whatever advantage we can get when it comes to beating him in the November election.

We do believe it is extremely good that pundits in Washington are taking a look at this race. We know one of the three candidates spent a good amount of time educating the DC crowd to try and bring some attention to the competitiveness of this race. Hopefully, the national Republicans will keep watching this race and lend us a hand.

You're probably going to get accused of being a tool of the Reid campaign again with the DC comment about a candidate, but it's true. This article is probably a result of all the work Reid did in DC in bringing attention to this race and how it could be competitive. We should reward him by making him the nominee and the other two candidates should drop out and get behind him. The Republican party can't help him till the field is clear. Let's clear it for him.

Ah, I think this time anonymous is the shill for the Reid campaign. You people are nuts if you think Obey is going to lose.

Obey hasn't been tested since 1994, how can you be so confident he can't be beat? He would have lost in 1994 if the Republicans would have given Scott West a hand. In 96 and 98, it was too late, Obey had a formula for knocking West off by then.

I'm an unabashed supporter of Reid's. Reid knows what he's doing. More importantly, he knows how Washington works. While Tyberg or Robinson would still be asking where the bathrooms were, Reid would be getting things done for us in Washington.

I'm wondering why Tyberg and Robinson are running. Robinson's case is, from what I can tell, boiled down to this, 2-3% of incumbents lose every election, maybe God will smile on me and I will be one of the 3%. Tyberg is running because someone walked up to him while he was working in a coffee shop and said, you should run for Congress. Maybe either of those are good reasons, but I don't see it.

No, according to some friends of mine in the Republican Party, Robinson's running because he's mad the Republicans didn't run anyone in 2004. You're right about Tyberg though, it was some guy in the coffee shop. Reid's running because he actually wants to win.

from an outsider's perspective (and someone who really wants to knock off the incumbent congressman in my district):

a congressional race takes money.

lots of money.

Reid is probably the only candidate with the ability to raise money.

I don't like Robinson, based on his abortion position.

Tyberg is a nice guy, but can he win? The biggest advantage I see in him over Reid is his ability to take a stand without worrying about the political ramifications, namely with regard to the FairTax. Reid hasn't (at least I haven't seen it) come out with a position on the issue.

I like Reid and Tyberg, and the jury's still out. But I grew up in the 7th, and my family still lives up there, so I'll be following this and supporting someone.

Either way, good luck dumping Obey.

And by the way. Why is it that I'm the only one who's willing to put my name on my post? What's with all of you anonymous people? Afraid to tick off a fellow Republican? Hash it out till September, and then kiss and make up and get behind the nominee for the general.... No need to be private about it. Whoever I support, I won't be bitter if they don't win, and I'll have no animosity against the others in the race.

I asked Reid about the fair tax. He said he would support it if it came to a vote. Says he thinks we should definitely junk the current tax code and replace it.
