Party Line

This week the Constitution Party was passing out Tyberg for Congress literature at its booth at the Wisconsin Valley Fair. We had heard Tyberg thought about bolting for the Constitution Party before the filing deadline. This seems to lend a lot of credibility to that rumor.

At this point, we have to credit to Tyberg for not switching to the Constitution Party line because that would have done more damage to Nick Reid's chances in November by siphoning off ultra-conservative votes (who would never vote for Obey) in a head to head match-up with Obey.

It does make us wonder which party Tyberg really wanted to represent though.

Another FYI: Tyberg is actually trying to have fundraiser this week in Wood County, sponsored by the County Chair. So just a week after he sent out an email braging about the fact that he doesn't "hold big money fundraisers," he holds one. I guess it's no different than agreeing to an endorsement process and then backing out on it.

So, according to you, he should just sit with the money he has and let the carry him through November - despite numerous posts here that Jeff hasn't raised money. Well, you people here would complain if you were hung with a new rope. He is holding a fundraiser to .... wait for it ... raise funds for his campaign. One of the points you all seem to have against him. And now that he is trying to raise funds, you still bash Jeff.

Make up your damn minds.

And for the record, Jeff has always meant to run as a Republican candidate. Just because the Constitution Party (who has no candidate that I know of) was handing out leaflets for him, doesn't mean he was going to run with them.

If you want people to stop saying this is a Reid shill blog, then stop acting like one. It would have been nice to give the kudos to Jeff for not switching parties, which would have really hurt Republican chances, and then leave it at that - rather than your "but it does make us wonder..." line. Nice try at a negative spin, though....for a non-Reid shill site.

Bill, We could go round and round aobut this. But yes, we have bashed Jeff for not only failing to raising any funds to be able to compete with Obey, but argueing that it is a good thing he can't raise money. Now less than a week later he apparently reverses himself. My point is that it is too late to start raising the money now. And by holding these fundraisers he's admiting that in fact you do need money to run a successful campaign. And since he has none, and cannot possibly raise enough to catch Reid or Obey in 1 month, he cannot be taken seriously. The real question is, why don't you and your candidate make up your minds; either raising money to run a credible campaign is evil, and means your on the take, or it is a necessary requirement of anyone who wants to win an election.

It also sez something about Tyberg's word when he broadcasts that his campaign is the best because he doesn't hold big money fundraisers and then turns around and has one a week later. I think that is the first guy's point. And since the only arguement for Tyberg is supposed to be his character, it seems to me to be a legit topic.

Bill, if you think this is a "Reid shill blog" stop reading it. No one is pounding the keyboard for you.

It's cool, Bill. Jeff hasn't really played his cards right in this area, my friend. Even I would have to admit that he has set himself up for this.

The common man platform isn't going to work on a large scale. To center the campaign message on that isn't smart politically. It would take far too much PR capital to run with something like this, because everyone has their own concept of what the common man is, and most who consider themselves common men, I would assume are union, and I'm afraid Jeff doesn't have the upper hand when it comes to those folks, because of Reid's work experience in the laborer's union.

As soon as Jeff started pulling out the common man talking points, it reminded me of John Kerry's move to comment how much Louisiana looked like Veitnam as a springboard into his experience in the military (which led to his political war with the Swiftboat vets). Kerry set himself up in a very wrong way, and it proved fatal to his campaign. Jeff, I think, has made an analgous fatal move.

"So, according to you, he should just sit with the money he has and let the carry him through November."

No, Bill, according to Jeff remember the "My campaign hasn’t been about money, and we haven’t held any big fund-raisers and we won’t be direct-mailing you every week asking for money. Instead we’ve focused on meeting people and listening to them."

I agree, Jeff really set himself up for this one. This is a common-sense political fluff for the common man. In fact there have been far too many fluffs in his campaign.

Re the common man campaign message: You can't center your campaign message around very personal characteristics, and then whine about personal attacks when someone tries to criticize it. It's like setting up your hospital next to your artillery, and whining about how terrible the other side is because they continue to hit your hospital.

Hey 12:12 PM. I'll read whatever I damn well please, thank you very much. And I'll thank you to not try and get me to go away.

For the record, I have said, with my name signed (unlike all the anonymous posters here...what are you hiding?), that I do NOT believe this is a Reid shill site. I said that I had once believed so, but because Nick said it wasn't, and I do not believe Nick to be a liar (having met and talked to him MANY times), then I would change my thinking. Even though I never actually came out and accused this place of being a shill site, I apologized to the writers of this blog for even thinking it. I also, in the same post, commended the writers of this blog for keeping me - a newcomer to Wisconsin - appraised of Obey's actions.

So you can back the Frak off of me, man.

Well, Obey Out endorsed Reid, so why exactly would anyone be surprised if they favor Reid in their coverage.

Next, this makes me wonder what Party Tyberg wants to be in as well. Obey Out didn't call Tyberg any names or anything, they just wondered "aloud." I give them credit for a mild pat on the back for not bolting the party.

Finally, bill, thanks for reading here with us. But the other commenters are right, Tyberg sent out an e-mail to supporters saying he wouldn't be holding big money fundraisers. It was part of a strategy to be the "common man's candidate." The fact that he's holding one now makes him look hypocritical. It's fair to call him out on that.

Oh, and putting your first name on the site does not make you non-anonymous. For all we know you could be bill smith, bill jones, or bill clinton or your name might not be bill at all.

I think the author's main point was that Jeff seemingly commits to one thing and then goes the other way (remember the heated rhetoric after he reneged on the endorsement issue?). We can continue to bash Jeff on every waffle or perceived waffle until the cows come home, but what's the point?

The problem with these posts is that it is building a wall between Reid and Tyberg supporters. We need each other if we're going to win this race against Obey.

While I didn't think it was a good decision to continue this primary race, it doesn't have to be the end of the world either. Supporters of both candidates have about 90% agreement; we just disagree on whom will best represent our point of view.

I am unapologetically a Reid supporter, but I have nothing against any Tyberg supporters. I will continue to try to convince the few I meet that we have a better shot at Obey by backing Nick, but I will not bash Jeff.

This race will sort itself out and we'll have one candidate after the September primary. I hope that we can focus on the big prize; Dave Obey's ultra-liberal seat in Congress. After September, we need Bill and everyone else in order to beat Mr. Deep Pockets in November.

Continuing to focus on Tyberg v. Reid can only hurt our hopes of maintaining party unity and will build resentment between the two sides who will need to unite after the primary. Don't forget that Bill is conservative; we like conservatives in the Republican Party.
