A Sad Day for America

We just gave Nancy Pelosi the keys to the House. Scarry.

Also, thanks to the Journal-Sentinel, we now know what else Obey was doing rather than working on 2007 appropriations bills, he was planning a party . . . "Answering to "Mr. Chairman," Obey had a spread of food and drinks for guests, who included House Democrat Tammy Baldwin of Madison."

Hmmm... Lets compare this post to some "snippets" in a Journal-Sentinel article about the first day of Congress 4 years ago, dated January 7, 2003...

"Rep. Tom DeLay (R-Texas), the new House majority leader and a man widely known as "The Hammer," cuddled and cooed over his infant grandson on the House floor during opening day proceedings..."

"Right away, House Republicans pushed through changes that make it easier for lobbyists to send boxes of pizza and buckets of chicken to congressional offices. The changes also allow charities to give lawmakers free travel and lodging at resorts.

The rules changes by the majority Republican leadership caught Democrats by surprise and ignored the House ethics committee's warnings against skirting the spirit of ethical conduct.

The changes, which apply only to House members and their staffs, passed on a party-line vote, 221-203. A Democratic effort to kill the resolution was defeated, 225-200."

Why were members of our party thrown out in November? Because they felt that they were elected to fatten their own pockets, change district boundaries to insure their own re-election, suck up to lobbyists in exchange for free travel, golf trips and cash, as well as brown-nosing the too powerful religious right zealots that where eager to go rabid over key buzz words they could drag out every 2 years.

If Obey "...had a spread of food and drinks for guests", I would make the leap to assume that it was not paid for by some extreme whacko group that will come calling for favors in the future, as was the rule for the last 4 year. The new house is passing rules against that, directly opposite of the dismal intent of our own neo-conled right wing leadership from 4 years ago.

Go ahead: change the subject, dodge the truth, attack the messenger, ignore the facts and move on to something else: you have become very good at spouting the party line vomit that is emblematic of where we are today.

These are the facts and show yet again the wrong direction our party has been heading, and Nick Reid would have sought to continue this same direction if he had been elected. We need a moderate voice to speak for REAL 7th District Republican values in 2 years, not the same disgusting Karl Rove clones that have now led us back into the wilderness.

Based on the most recent comment, I feel that a "Reid Out" blog is needed. Obviously the point has been made that we need new leadership, even in the 7th District. The question is now: have we let our local leadership drag us too far right for us to ever recover.
I, for one, hope not.

It is also against the rules of the House to pay for food for receptions from your official funds. So, who paid for Obey's food, his campaign, and who funds Obey's campaign, special interests!!! An overwhelming majority of Obey's campaign cash comes from PAC's and special interest lobbyists. So, to the first commenter - Obey is business as usual, he just lies about it.

This assumption, with no evidence to back it up, is the best we have? I see this as further proof as to how far our local "leadership" has sunk. It is obvious that you wish to see things in our district remain in a “business as usual” standard.

How come there is no acknowledgement of the first commenters post: that our own party bent over the American public and began ramming our backdoors with the lowest form of abhorrent unetherical behavior from day one, 4 years ago?

I have a new suggestion for the readers of this site: perhaps it is run by the Dems. As ridiculous as it sounds, it is less absurd then the constant B.S. that continues to spew forth here, and would explain why the owners refuse to come clean about their identities. By continuing to disgorge the crap that is read here, it further pushes us into the dismal sewage of negativism that independent voters rejected two months ago.

Polling shows Independent voters rejected the administration's handling of the war. The other stuff was just the reason they picked up a couple extra seats.

As for corruption, Democrats proved just as corrupt, they just weren't in charge at the time (Mollohan - sweetheart real estate deals, Jefferson - $90,000 in bribe money in his freezer, McKinney - hits a police officer, Murtha - ABSCAM, Pelosi - illegal campaign activites, Hoyer - documented Democrat version of K-Street project).

The third commenter rightly points out that Obey is paying for his party the same way DeLay did.

The purpose of this site is to hold Obey accountable for what he does in office. Just because some of you so called Republicans seem fine with having him there says volumes about you.

Quote: "The third commenter rightly points out that Obey is paying for his party the same way DeLay did."

Really? Where?

The third commenter states: "It is also against the rules of the House to pay for food for receptions from your official funds. So, who paid for Obey's food, his campaign, and who funds Obey's campaign, special interests!!! An overwhelming majority of Obey's campaign cash comes from PAC's and special interest lobbyists."

Please post any proof that Obey did not pay for the "spread" himself? Where is this proven in any statement, here or elsewhere. In case you do not know the meaning of the word:

Proof: [proof] -noun,

1. any factual evidence that helps to establish the truth of something; i.e, "If you have any proof for what you say, now is the time to produce it"
2. evidence sufficient to establish a thing as true

—Synonyms 1. demonstrate, confirm, substantiate, verify.

The implication is that the evidence is readily available to prove the statement that someone other than Obey paid for the "spread of food and drinks", (i.e., "that Obey is paying for his party the same way DeLay did"). There is nothing in the article cited to indicate that the statements posted here are even attempting to be truthful.

Show the proof. This is a simple request.

The normal hearsay, whining, innuendo, finger pointing and other bullfeces that is typically posted here will not suffice.

Proof. Simple enough for you?

We'll wait patiently for your response...

... due to the entire lack of previous veracity that exemplifies this site, I anticipate this will not come. This speaks volumes about you.

Nice lob, 9:11. Spectacular smash 6:52.

On a side note, while the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled a few years ago that Web loggers, website operators and e-mail list editors can't be held responsible for libel for information they publish, this is changing. More than 50 lawsuits in the past two years, stemming from postings on blogs and website message boards, have been filed across the nation, many of those suits filed for libel, defamation or privacy violations have sought not just cash but the silencing of the blogger. This is based on the legal fact that anyone who operates a blog is now considered a journalist, and subject to the same rules as any other international publisher. Also, allowing others to post intentionally false information falls into the category known as “republishing”.
For anyone interested in the changing world of blogs and litigation, I would suggest looking at the case of Minnesota blogger Michael Brodkorb, as well and the article “The Internet Journalist: Fact Checking and Defamation Requirements” (http://www.dba-oracle.com/internet_journalism_libel_laws.htm). ISP’s are REALLY distancing themselves from the legal ramifications of people that use their services as well.

One intriguing aspect of this is the concept of ”Cyberlibel”, which can be interpreted as: “Statements that accuse someone of illegal behavior on the internet”. This would seem to indicate more lawsuits involving unsubstantiated allegations of illegal behavior by politicians coming in the future as well.

Just my lurkers humorous two-cents worth. Back to my corner, now. Let the rumble continue.

9:11 said: “Polling shows Independent voters rejected the administration's handling of the war. The other stuff was just the reason they picked up a couple extra seats.” Were you ON Pluto when it was Plutoed????

“…couple a extra seats”????? Hey 9:11, how about some FACTS for a change: “We got our butts kicked”, according to Dubya. The total was a 31 seat pickup for the Dumbs, including the pickup of the Vermont At-Large seat, previous held by Independent Bernie Sanders who caucused with the Dumbs anyway.

Count this again: the Dumbs gained 31 seats. No incumbent Dumbocrat was defeated and neither did we win any open Dumbocrat seats (also true in the Senate). This took us from a majority of 232 – 202 - 1, to a dismal minority of 233 – 202.

This included a LOT of candidates in districts that had been reshaped to insure re-election of Republican incumbents and a LOT of historically solidly districts us, including John Gard and Nick Reid’s good buddy and mentor, right wing suck-up Jim Ryun.

This was the largest seat gain for the Dumbocrats since the ’74 election.

This sucked.

Jesus. This is more than “… a couple extra seats.” Wake up, try drinking a swig of reality and get your head out of Uranus.

9:11 said: “The third commenter rightly points out that Obey is paying for his party the same way DeLay did.” Are you WHACKED??? Where does it say this?????? Where is this written??? This is an absolute LIE! READ IT: YES, UNLESS YOU CAN BACK IT UP, THIS IS A LIE. I’ll leave the name calling to others.
And YOU think you speak for MY values?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

9:11 said: “The purpose of this site is to hold Obey accountable for what he does in office. Just because some of you so called Republicans seem fine with having him there says volumes about you.”

I think we all agree that holding Obey accountable for what he does is important. It is what EVERY person in EVERY district should do for ALL elected officials. It’s what most people haven’t done in this country for the last decade.

But it’s time to knock off the attack crap and get a clue. People are waking up to how widespread and detrimental this type of negative attacking without basis is, and the bulk of it is centered in OUR party.

We need to find someone who can cut into the 30% of independents in this district that voted for Obey, and fight fire with fire. Crap like this blog only further alienates this group and makes a victory in 2008 even more unlikely.

...ya' nit.

Ok, the whole "libel" diatribe would be applicable to the owners of Obey Out, not an anonymous comment, so I'm not sure what your point was. Nothing about the original post was libelous. Moreover, none of the comments accused Obey of doing anything illegal. What they said was it looked like Obey also used special interest funds to pay for his party via his campaign. This is a legal practice, but it says the money came originally from the same source.

As to the person who wants proof, first, house rules say there is an exception to allowing outside funds to pay for food for swearing in receptions. Obey's campaign finance filing covering this party is due April 15th. We'll all have to wait till then to see. And, it's not a lie, it's a pretty good educated guess as all Members of Congress seem to pay for their receptions this way (all you need to do is check the first quarter filings from 2005 for members of congress and you will find such an expenditure, www.fec.gov).

As to the couple of extra seats comment. Apparently, you didn't read the post carefully. What is said was we lost a majority of the seats because of the war. Corruption only really cost us a couple extra seats (where corruption was made an issue). Please read more carefully and write less.

"... it's a pretty good educated guess." You have no proof. You Lied. Period.

"Corruption only really cost us a couple extra seats." This is totally untrue: It's the whole package, get it? The direction our party has been going altogether was voted on, not just the private turd of a war that President Chimp and the NeoAnderthons are continuing to drop into the mideast.

It's Iraq, corruption, the lack of desire to find Osama Bin Laden, the continuous suck up to right wing christian fundamentalist zeaolts, the continuous re-districting, the abdication of ethic work, the tax breaks for big business, the wanton destruction of the environment, the ENTIRE raping of the budget by Dick's pals at Halliburton, the excessive out of control spending, the complete, the spiraling record deficit, the inability to provide our troops with proper supplies or direction.... should I go on?

The right-wing NeoAnderThons that began hijacking our party in the late 70's have now destroyed almost all credibility out party had in foreign policy, domestic affairs, defense and the economy.

We lost because the REAL mainstream or our party, the majority toward the center, has had enough of this and started to vote the other way.

This is a terrible indictment of our leadership, both nationally and at the local level that continue to expound the same rhetoric that got us here.

... ya nit.
